Frequently Asked WordPress Security & Update Questions
Security is the most important reason why you should keep your WordPress website up to date. Well at least we think so.
WordPress is a popular target for hackers, malicious code distributors, data thieves, and wanna be hackers, because it is such a popular and widely used platform.
Because WordPress is open source, it means anyone can study the source code to learn and improve it. However it also means that hackers can study it too and find ways to break into websites.
But there is good news – for every bad hacker there are 2 good hackers. And by good hackers we mean WordPress security experts who study code and properly report security bugs / fixes. Every time a security vulnerability is reported, the core WordPress team works diligently to release an update that fixes the issue.
This means that if you are not using the latest version of WordPress, then you are using software with known security vulnerabilities. Hackers can search for websites running the older version, and you may become a victim of a sophisticated attack.
Not just WordPress itself, plugins can also be exploited by hackers. You need to make sure that all your WordPress plugins, themes, and the core itself is always up to date.
The short answer – at least once a month! Here is why:
Your WordPress website is made up of 3 parts:
- The WordPress Platform
- Your WordPress Theme (website template)
- And Plugins
Each part is created by different team of developers, all of which are constantly improving their Themes or Plugins.
WordPress itself only releases a major update every 2 months or so, but in between it releases many smaller “beta” updates. And every time WordPress releases an update, the developers of Themes and Plugins have to test their versions against the new WordPress to see if there are any issues.
So not only are these developers releasing updates for their own technology (themes & plugins) but they also have to release additional updates if there was a major WordPress update.
There is a constant release of updates, whether it is from developers of plugins, or developers of themes or the WordPress developers. Thus it is vitally important that you are always checking your website for new updates to stay current and ensure your website is operating as it should.
There are 2 types of WordPress Attacks: Targeted and Non-targeted
Targeted attacks is when a hacker is specifically trying to access your website. This is very rare, and usually only occurs if A) you are storing very sensitive information (like credit cards) on your website or B) someone has a revenge-motivated reason.
Non-targeted attacks are the most common, but don’t take it personally! Hackers are chance-takers; they develop software that target thousands of websites at once hoping to find the few that have security vulnerabilities. So, It’s not a question of why but more like when.
What is the silver-lining? Well hacking by nature is long tedious process that involves trying, failing, trying, failing and so on until a security vulnerability is found. Thus it is easy to spot when someone is trying to hack your site. In other words its very rare that a hacker gets it right on the first attempt and thus it gives you ample time to stop them.

LaunchWeb was started to bridge the gap between amazing website design and affordability. Thus, we streamlined our business, and reduced overheads, so that we can offer A-Grade websites at reasonable prices. Your website is the most important part of your online marketing strategy, and if it looks great and sells well, it will launch your business to new heights.
